Sony kills the entire Z series. I think it's a stupid move

While we were waiting endlessly for the second iteration of Z Ultra which never happened, Sony has apparently decided to shut the whole Z series down:

This is the official statement from a Sony rep:
"The Xperia Z line has reached its culmination – Xperia X series represents a new chapter and evolution of our product strategy. Whilst the Xperia Z series was all about bringing the best of Sony's advanced technologies to smartphones, Xperia X series is based on bringing smart, adaptive Sony user experiences across camera, battery performance and hardware / software design."

To me, this is a grudging acceptance by Sony that they could not compete in the flagship segment of the competitive smartphone market. While Sony's Xperia Z series were fine devices, they could never reach the sales levels of Samsung's Galaxy S series or LG's G series. The Xperia X series will probably be cheaper devices but then, Samsung on the one hand and the plethora of Chinese makers on the other have already flooded those segments with all kinds of phones at all price points.

Sorry Sony, this is all but your fault. In today's environment, a fine phone with a few defects here and there will not simply cut it.
