How to extract kernel image?

How do I extract the kernel image from the stock firmware? (OI5, first link in this post) I've followed various guides (such as this one) and poked at it for a few hours, but I can't figure it out. When using the linked guide, I get a segmentation fault. I'm trying to extract a zImage file suitable for passing through this tool: http://ift.tt/1rvcUYk
