Getting back to a stable/usable Kindle Fire - Kindle OS or another ROM?

Hey all -

I still use my 1st gen Kindle Fire primarily for reading books with the Kindle App, and also a bit of web browsing.

I'm running the last available nightly otterx build of CyanogenMod 11 (from 2015-11-08), and despite turning off all animations and experiments in turning up the clock speed of the CPU, it's very slow and apps crash often and the system often reboots. Normally with the Kindle app, I need to launch it a few times before it actually works properly. (The first few times it usually stops responding and closes.)

All of this is to ask: would I be better off going back to the stock Kindle Fire OS if I'm going to use it mostly for reading? Or would perhaps a different ROM help? Thanks!
